30 in 30 ~ Day 11 ~ "Fragile"

"Fragile" pastel on wallis 6x6

"On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are"

~ Sting

Hi Everyone,

Meet "Penny".  She is my daughter's chicken, or she was until she was killed by a ruthless hawk a few weeks ago.  While deciding what to paint today, the song "Fragile" was playing on Pandora in the background, and a sweet photo of Penny appeared.  Need I say more?

So she has become the painting for Day 11 of my 30 day challenge.  (Its really going by so quickly.)

Today I had the pleasure of company in my studio, painting with my granddaughter.  Lots of conversation, laughter and feeling very comfortable and cozy there.  And even Gingersnaps joined us while she took her nap close by.  She is my 16 year old lhasa apso, and very close companion.

And on behalf of chickens everywhere, I would say that although Penny was killed by a hawk, her life was much better than most chickens.  I am disgusted by the way chickens are raised for mass consumption these days.  And it is my hope that someday, in the very near future that factory farms are replaced by more humane farms.  After all, animals have feelings.  Chickens have feelings.  And who are we to say that they don't deserve a pleasant life?

So with that I will close and see you tomorrow.

Enjoy.

30 in 30 ~ Day 10 "Red Hawk"

"Red Hawk" pastel on wallis 6x6

"The red hawk is the messenger bird, and wherever it shows up, pay attention. There is a message coming.”~ Ted Andrews, "Animal Speak"

Hi Everyone,

I finally got around to painting the red hawk today and I don't know why it took me so long.  He is actually the reason I decided to do the 30 day challenge this year!

He lives in my neighborhood.  (actually its more accurate to say  that I live in his neighborhood)  I see him most days, either perched on a low branch, sitting on a fence, or soaring by....  I even saw this amazing bird zooming down so fast that I actually felt sorry for whatever he was after, I doubt it stood a chance.

So after seeing him over and over again I had to laugh.  I knew I had to paint him.  And I will be putting him in some future paintings as well.

His beauty startles me every time I see him.  There's alot written about the symbolism of the red hawks, and I liked the following message:

"Many different cultures believe when animals cross your path, they’re bringing a message to share with you. The Cherokee belief that Red Tailed and Red Shoulder Hawks are messengers of vision. When you see one of these beautiful birds, what ever it was you were thinking about at the time, is happening around you or it’s going to come true and manifest in your life."

So with thanks to my red hawk for inspiring me, I will sign off.

See you all tomorrow,

Enjoy!

30 in 30 ~ Day 9 ~ "Renewal"

"Renewal" pastel on wallis 6x6

"Better to start up a thousand wrong roads than to spend your life going nowhere because you know the way." ~Robert Brault

Hi Everyone,

Today, the ninth day of the January daily painting challenge I decided to sketch the cardinal again.  This time, the female.  A symbol of renewal.  One of the things we all are constantly doing.  (whether we know it or not)

So when I think of renewal, my first thoughts are of my art.  But I must confess that so far I have never struggled to keep it fresh and new.  It just happens.  I don't really judge it either.  I just try to get out of the way.  Because although I do have to critique myself to a point, I have also learned to accept my work and move on to the next one.  I find alot of artists, both professional and not, stop painting or don't enjoy it anymore because they are deciding its not good enough.  And I find if you just do it, just keep painting no matter what, eventually things lighten up and you learn something.  You learn what you love or what you hate. But that is better than learning nothing at all, right?  Its called moving forward.  Same thing with everything in life.  If you don't keep trying, you'll never know yourself.  What you are capable of.  And what you are not capable of.  But mostly, just give yourself the benefit of the doubt.  Because, like Bob said, "He not busy being born is busy dying." ~Bob Dylan

(So we might as well stick with renewal)

That's the lecture for today.

ENJOY!

30 in 30~ Day 8~ "Spirit Visitor"

"Use what talent you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best."  ~Author unknown

Greetings Everyone!

Day 8 of my 30 day challenge and I chose the cardinal today.  For many reasons.  But mostly because of their incredible beauty, both male and female.  Of course "avian sexism" has been observed with some, but they, like many great birds, somehow get away with it!  I believe they have incredible charm.

We have been seeing alot of them lately, with the recent snow they are even more breathtaking.  And they have several "meanings" to so many ... of course they are confidant, but also symbolic of "wealth, power and enthusiasm.  Knowing what you want and how to get it."

They also say that cardinals appear when angels are near.

So whatever they mean to you, I hope you enjoy this one.

He certainly brightened my day!

Enjoy.

30 in 30 ~ Day 7 ~ "Puff Daddy"

"Puff Daddy" pastel on wallis 6x6

Hi Everyone,

Today is day 7 of my 30 day challenge and it is snowing like crazy.  And we already have 11 inches!  Gorgeous.

And it fits right in with my "Things with Wings" theme because there are so many birds at the feeders today. (We had four deer out back as well!)  ~ but this is about wings ....so...

The blue jay won out today.  And this one is covered up in snow, puffed to stay warm.  On google I found "Blue Jay Symbolism: Fierce, Passion, & Authority."  And we all know this is true.

(They can actually imitate the hawk's call to lure him away from their nest... so very cool.)

And when I checked out the blue jay on the shamanic journey page, it said that "the jay is the power animal symbol of being in the present."  Practicing mindfulness and being in the present is the goal this year so "Puff Daddy"  is sending that message today.

Enjoy every moment!

See you tomorrow.

"Balance" pastel on wallis 6x6

To see one of these birds floating on the water is a symbol of reflection and balance, going inward and finding stillness. If this bird has a full bill it is an omen of unexpected abundance coming your way.

Hello everyone!

Got a late start to my daily painting but had a blast with this pelican.  And my granddaughter!  I think its especially nice to share our creative energies in the studio.

So I saw this pelican in the wild west a couple of years ago and was pleasantly surprised.  He was alone, content and just in such a peaceful setting.  Painting him today put me right in that very same spot and I hope it does you too!

So with that I will see you tomorrow.

Enjoy

30 in 30 ~ Day 5 ~ Things With Wings ~ "AMERICA II"

America II ~ pastel on wallis ~ 6x6

"Ours is the only country deliberately founded on a good idea."

 ~John Gunther

Greetings Everyone,

Another eagle today.  Its funny, I've been painting eagles and bears lately.  (How strange to be impacted by politics in this way.)  It wasn't at all intentional, but that's happening, because I am a product of my environment,  and so is all that I create.  So I have decided to embrace it and let it come out and show itself in whatever form it wants.  After all, I am a painter who paints from emotion and instinct primarily.

So America, the eagle, has come back again today.

For those who don't know, this is all part of my January challenge, which I do every year.  The idea is to paint whatever shows itself, every day.  There is also a red hawk in my yard, lots of cardinals, and other songbirds who will fit into my theme of "Things with Wings."

Let's see who or what visits me tomorrow morning!

Until then ~

ENJOY!

"Black Eyed Susans at Mount Monadnock" pastel on wallis 18x24

“Look to the north where Grand Monadnock’s height enchains the fancy, and rewards the sight" ~ H. P. Lovecraft

Hello Everyone,

Its a beautiful day in Southern New Hampshire, its been a mild winter.  Today I am visiting a favorite place of mine, Rosaly's garden where the view of Monadnock and the gorgeous flowers never cease to inspire and nourish me.

Its funny, I had decided not to do the 30 day challenge this year but after hearing some disappointment from some of you, at the last minute I changed my mind.  And I am glad I did.  Thank you for your encouragement and belief in me!  I have learned so much.  I experimented with several new techniques this time, which really paid off.  Now I find myself envisioning my work in a different way...interesting how this progression unfolds.

Anyway, thank you ALL for joining me on this journey and please stay tuned!  The best way to hear of my new art is on my email newsletter,   click HERE to sign up.

See you soon!

"Welcoming" 12x9 pastel on wallis

"A lake is the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature.

It is earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature." ~Henry David Thoreau

Greetings Everyone,

Day 29.  And just one more to go.  Wow, I have learned so much.  And this exercise puts me right where I need to be for the rest of the year.  Not just a sense of accomplishment, but a feeling that I am more connected with my art, my patrons, and still very excited about painting every single day.  (I will, however, take a couple of days off after tomorrow, lol.)

Today's work is pastel.  It's actually a rework of an older piece that I found.  I found a few of those yesterday while looking for some paper and they all went in the sink and the old was washed away.  Or most of it was.  What was left was a stained paper and it dried overnight and was ready to go this morning.  That's what I love about wallis, it can take all of that and more!

Today my family and I are saying "so long for now" to a lovely man.  My uncle, aged 97 passed last week.  And he taught us so much about strength, and alot about love too.  A gentle soul, very much like my Dad who passed in 1990.  I guess all we can do now is strive to be the best that we can, and the kindest too....

 See you tomorrow!

Hi Everyone,

Well this painting is not quite done, but I have run out of time.  I have a hot date tonight so I must be on time for that!

I hope you all are enjoying the last days of January.  Its hard to believe that I have only two more paintings to go!

But of course, I will be continuing to paint almost daily in February.  This time of year is always the most productive for me as a painter.  And I am grateful every day for my studio, where I have the space to work and the freedom to be my own boss... it always makes me smile.

See you all tomorrow!

"Joy" Oil on Linen 16x12

“Women show men beauty in things beyond their ambitions. Women tell men to stop and smell the roses.” ~ Criss Jami

Greetings Everyone!

Beautiful yellow roses today, and I decided to use oils as well.  I painted from home, which was a challenge because I soon discovered not only was I limited on paint, but most of my brushes were at the studio....lol.  But I do like challenges, right?

Yellow roses are symbolic of Joy, Friendship, and Good Health...  I love yellow, and these have a particularly beautiful scent, which is also important to me.  When I plant my gardens I always consider scent.  To be in the garden surrounded by the scent of beautiful flowers is heavenly.

So today we have had all types of weather here. I enjoyed walking in the sunshine earlier this morning, and now it is grey and snowing.  Typical for New England...

See you all tomorrow,

ENJOY!

"Winter Sheep" pastel 12x12

"If all the beasts were gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to the man.

All things are connected. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons of the Earth."

~Chief Seattle of the Suquamish Tribe, letter to President Franklin Pierce

Hi Everyone,

Day 26 has come quickly and although my intention was to paint with oils, my studio was set up for pastels so I decided to go with the flow....

And I'm glad I did!  This painting came together in just a few hours, and I felt totally connected to it.  I love it when that happens.

Regarding the quote, people often ask if I am a vegetarian.  Well I have done that, also the vegan approach.  It is my preferred diet.  However I sometimes eat meat.  But when I do, my choice is always locally raised or organic ....(when I get that choice. )  When I think of factory farms and how animals are treated I lose my appetite.  So I rest easier this way.  And I do totally believe what this Indian wrote to President Franklin Pierce.  We are ALL connected!   (Coincidentally, the Franklin Pierce homestead is very close to where I live....)

I enjoyed the day very much, and I look forward to seeing you all back here tomorrow!

Hi Everyone,

Monday Monday and I got a late start today.  This little 6x6 oil was for me, a trip back to Giverny - and believe me that is always a great memory.  In fact, I hope to revisit this magical place someday.  I would love to paint there....

But today, in my own way, I did exactly that!

This was a very limited palette as well, but I think I captured its essence.... ?

"Spring's Promise" pastel 9x12

"In Spring, everything is full of promise.... The child sporting upon the lawn, and the season, sympathize together, and nature rejoices in her virgin loveliness. "  ~Charles Lanman

Hi Everyone,

As a New England gardener Springtime for me starts in January....   We have a short growing season here and everything happens FAST.  So when the snow has melted and the ground is dry enough, we must be ready!

This apple tree has provided me with great delight for numerous springtime hours.  The property where I live has many apple trees on it, and as a child I knew them very well.  Climbing them was great fun, and being rescued by my Dad when I was too high to come down often provided alot of laughs too.  And of course the delicious apples themselves.... And now I am still enjoying them.  Now I get to paint them.

This piece will be part of my own private collection, something to make me smile for the rest of my life!  That's the greatest thing about owning art.  It always comes through.  (So if you find a painting that really speaks to you, go ahead and do yourself a favor and buy it!)

See you tomorrow!

"Night Color" pastel 6x8

"I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day. " ~Vincent Van Gogh

Hi Everyone,

So we missed the nor'easter today!  Wow, that's unusual where we live, but of course we will get one eventually... we don't have much snow here, maybe a foot?  Anyway, I am thinking of my loves in the south that are probably enjoying it.  (At least I know one for sure is!)

For today, I revisited a small painting I found unfinished.  This piece was totally different than what it is now.  I decided to make the daytime night and therefore change all of the colors.  And then I added alot to the composition.  This was painted from my imagination and it was quite fun.  I find I am learning more and more as I paint.  Very enjoyable.

Speaking of fun, we are going to a comedy show tonight, North Shore Comedy.  And dinner too.  Very fun and especially glad we will not have to drive home in a blizzard!  Have a great Saturday everyone.

See you tomorrow!

Hi Everyone,

Looking at some photos I decided to paint this scene from Hancock, NH.  Its a lovely swamp (I seem to have a thing for them).  And I also saw a moose in this very place.  But today it was all about just the September scene, alone with its happy colors and smiling energy.

I also visited with a client today.  A short visit, but always nice to keep in touch.  Grateful for that.

And its Friday!  And already twenty two days into my 30 day challenge.  Time certainly does fly when you're having fun.

Greetings Everyone,

Day 21 already!  And I am learning alot about my art these days and the direction I am going.... always a good thing!

Today's effort is a very familiar scene to me, its literally just down the road.  I have walked this road for many many years.  And the surprising thing for me is that I always enjoy it.  And it feels like poetry when I really focus on what's right in front of me.

So that's how I felt painting this, and I hope you enjoy it.  Comments and critiques are always welcome, don't be shy!

"Promise" pastel 9x12

Hi Everyone,

A sunny day today, beautiful shadows on the snow.... but I decided to paint an ocean scene for a change.

Thinking about the promise of a new day, awakening before the dawn and wondering what the day will reveal.?

And so it goes...

Today my uncle died, age 97.  A wonderful sweet man, still sharp, still fun, still kind.  And now off to where.... the promised land?  I would imagine yes, undoubtedly yes, for such a dear man as he.

So today was both dark and light, and full of love.... (as every day is really...)

Today I was thinking daisies.... soft, happy and bright.  Almost like sunshine itself.  Which I could use today, here in New Hampshire where it was about 12 degrees this morning and the hight is expected to be 16.  Wooohooo!  Well, January is the coldest month here.  And we haven't seen the 20 below weather yet, which usually arrives at the end of the month...

But I'm losing track.  Who cares about the temps when you can sit in the studio and paint daisies?  (Not I.)

A snowy start to the day brought me back to a couple of years ago when my daughter and her family built this fabulous snowman.  It was a group effort with two children and two adults.... there was some standing on shoulder action too.  Really very exciting to watch from the comfort of my couch, sipping tea and clutching my camera.....

Well today we don't have enough snow really to make a snowman, or you know that's where I would be!  But of course painting is a MUST and so I did the next best thing....

I think Sunday is my favorite day.  Relaxing, and it seems that's the day I usually take the time to do something I love.  I feel its really "my" day. And today was lovely painting from a reference photo I took in 2006.  So long ago!  Ten years!  And I took some time this morning to scroll through my thousands of photos until I found it.  So this is my effort for today and now I will do some chores.

I hope you are having a lovely day, whatever you may be doing.  And I will see you back here tomorrow!

Today it snowed here in New Hampshire.  Only a few inches, but very pretty.  Still I had to paint a scene on fire.  Last night I went to see "Get the Led Out" in Concord.  My two sisters and their dates, and me with mine.  FUN.  And Led Zeppelin is one of my favorite bands....

So still on fire from that great performance, I decided to revisit a beautiful place I painted en plein air in October last year.

Very inspiring....

This painting practically painted itself (Once I got out of its way!)  And now I will start a couple others, as I want to do this idea in a series.  I first saw this lovely view of Monadnock years ago at a residence in Jaffrey, New Hampshire where I was invited to paint en plein air.  It was delightful and it still is!  Now I paint mostly from memory.  That's what happens to very special places.

So I am done with this today and it was very fun to do.

Greetings Everyone,

Today the world is saying good-bye to David Bowie, an incredible man.  He was a force who inspired so many, on so many levels.  And I am one of the millions.  All through the years.  So at age 69 he has moved on.  I have to say his last record, Dark Star, released on Friday (his birthday) looks interesting to say the least.  I am not familiar with it yet, but listened to one of the recordings this morning.  The video showed a dead spaceman.  What a phenomenal way to spend your last days ..... still making art!

R.I.P. David Bowie.

So for me, this abstract called "Timeless" seemed the perfect response.

"O.P." pastel on wallis 12x9

Hi Everyone!

A foggy, rainy, restful day here in Southern New Hampshire.  Although not that restful for me because I am catching up on household chores as well as painting my cat O.P.   She is one of the most unfriendly cats I have ever had.  I got her and her sister 18 years ago from my vet.  They had been abandoned and he called me to see if I was interested.  They were of course adorable and I couldn't say no.  But as time went on Aggy became the loving adorable cat and O.P.  was usually in hiding, not wanting to come out.  They never fought but she was just a very private kitty cat.  Now, many years later, O.P. has become friendly.  Now that she is the only cat.  She is also very vocal, loves to talk back and is especially excited to see me in the early morning when I first get up.

So she was my subject today!

Tomorrow who knows.... just remember to....

Greetings Everyone!

Today I wondered how the cardinal ever found his way with all of the squirrels and turkeys at the bird feeders this morning!  But he did.  And he was watching me as closely as I was watching him.  So beautiful.  I love watching the birds, especially in the winter.  They seem so happy as they fly to and from the feeders.  And my cat O.P. has started to pay a little bit of attention but not much.  Or so it seems...   She is 18 now and is finally starting to mellow out a bit!  She loves being the only cat.  And she and Gingersnaps are not the best of friends, but not the worst either.

But today was about the cardinal.  So that's my subject today.  See you tomorrow!

Greetings Everyone!

Listening to Ravi Shankar, the Beatles and Dylan  ..... and wondering about dreams...  I have often found so many of my questions are solved in dreams and also the most amazing conversations have been brought to me in my dreams.  Remembering them is tricky, but if they are profound they are unforgettable.

Cooler temps are here but its all relative really.  I think it feels great outside today.  I have been outside briefly, chasing away the grey squirrels so the birds get their time at the feeders.... LOL.  In between catching up on computer issues, laundry, dinner, and PAINTING!

Although I need to be home sometimes, I find painting at the studio works best...none of these silly interruptions...

So that's where I will be tomorrow.

How is your January so far?  Hopefully GREAT.

Sweet Dreams ....

Enjoy!

30 in 30 ~ Day 3

"Spirit's Breath"

Hi Everyone!

Sunday, day 3 of my process and I was thinking about a recent experience.  I went to a restorative yoga class Friday night with a friend and although I have practiced yoga before, this was very different.  More of a meditation, with singing bowls being played in the background, reiki, and two hours of feeling very nurtured.  Loved it and will do it again.

Today's effort is a pastel with a watercolor underpainting.  This time I set up an easel here at home.  My little companion, Gingersnaps, is a sweet 15 year old lhasa apso. Lately she seems to really love having me close, so it worked perfectly.

Yesterday I painted with oils and palette knives, today pastels and who knows about tomorrow?  No clue, that's what I love about daily painting, I just have to go with the flow and enjoy.  It really works best for me that way.  I guess it does for all of us.

I once heard Thich Nhat Hanh speak in Montpelier, Vermont. He is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, poet and peace activist.  He walked in, sat down, and after a very long pause he said....

"Enjoy Your Breathing! "  So that's the goal for today!  See you here tomorrow!

30 in 30 ~ Day 2

"Joyful at Mud Pond" oil 12x12

"There is no way to happiness — happiness is the way. " ~Thich Nhat Hanh

Hi Everyone!

Well its day 2 of the 30 in 30 challenge that I love to do every January, and I went to Mud Pond today.  Actually I never left my studio but you know what I mean.  Revisiting some studies I did en plein air during the fabulous foliage last fall in southern New Hampshire.  Thanks to a dear friend who alerted me of the foliage back in October I remember that day well.  I woke up, flew out the door and enjoyed the most lovely day painting there. I did several studies and I think I will revisit this most pleasant place sometime in the very near future! But this time in the comfort of my studio.....  And please come for a visit anytime if you are in the area! Another set of eyes is always welcome.

See you tomorrow!

ENJOY!

30 in 30 ~ Day ONE

North Branch River oil on panel 18x24

Hi Everyone!

This will be my third year participating in a world - wide painting event, 30 paintings in 30 days!  Now I will do my best to complete this challenge but there are no guarantees that 30 finished paintings will be the end result! BUT, I want to get the year off to a great start with creating daily work.  Unfinished paintings will be finished as time goes on.  Either way I will post whatever I have.

So today I got to the studio at 7:45 AM  on New Year's Day!  Wooo Hoooo!  I am excited!  And here is my effort for today.

I find myself in the forest today and its where I love to be.  So let me know what you are thinking, how you are doing and I hope 2016 brings the world JOY.

Happy New Year!  See you tomorrow!
